Game-Day Clarity at Allianz Stadium 

Allianz Stadium stands as one of Australia’s premier multi-sport arenas. Serving as the home ground for the Sydney Roosters, the NSW Waratahs, and Sydney FC, the venue hosts more than 50 fixtures a year alongside international matches and major summer concerts. To elevate the game-day experience to match the world-class standard of the architecture, Venues NSW sought an audio upgrade capable of delivering pin-sharp speech intelligibility for on-pitch announcements and raw, physical impact for high-energy fan moments.

The Challenge

The central hurdle lay in taming the stadium’s five-second reverberation time (RT60)—the duration it takes for a sound to fade by 60 decibels. Because every announcement or whistle would linger in the bowl for a full five seconds, an indiscriminate audio system would create overlapping echoes and ruin speech intelligibility. To prevent this, the design brief demanded precise, localized coverage to aim acoustic energy directly at the audience, keeping it off the reflective architecture. Furthermore, the installation logistics were highly restrictive. The stadium had to remain fully operational throughout the upgrade, and crews faced a strict ban on cranes, boom lifts, or any contact whatsoever with the playing surface.

The Solution

Venues NSW selected JPJ Audio to design and deploy a permanent, full-bowl L-Acoustics Kara IIi system. Leveraging Soundvision modeling in collaboration with the L-Acoustics applications team and Clair Global, JPJ Audio carefully mapped array angles, subwoofer positioning, and coverage zones to keep audio energy strictly where needed. To navigate the stringent site access rules, JPJ adopted a touring-style workflow. They assembled, wired, and phase-checked every array off-site. Once at the venue, the crew transferred the pre-built units using load-transfer techniques and rope access, lifting them from the stadium’s four vomitories directly onto the roof structure.

The Result

Final on-site deployment took a mere five days, and the system successfully debuted for an A-League fixture in January 2026. The permanent installation effectively mitigates the venue’s long reverb tail, delivering a massive upgrade in sound clarity and energy. Operators now rely on a streamlined Q-SYS interface and LA4X amplification to continuously monitor system health, ensuring a reliable, stadium-wide audio experience for every match.

A lot of game-day presentations now involve pyro, lighting, and very high-impact moments. You need an audio system that delivers that energy, but just as importantly, when someone is speaking on the pitch, every word still has to land clearly. That was always the goal, and now we have a system that does both.
